The Devon Soap Company Ltd was registered at Companies House on 15 November 2012, number 08295542. Lisa Hosking was named sole director on day one and is still the sole director on every confirmation statement filed since. Thirteen years of trading, single owner, single address.
The watercolour label arrived in 2013 and has not changed in spirit since: a hand painted illustration, the recipe in lower-case, "hand made in Devon, Dartmouth, Devon TQ6 9AB, www.devonsoap.co.uk", a small TM beside the wordmark. Every bar from that day to this carries the postcode on the wrapper.

Most mass-market soap is melt-and-pour: pre-made base, re-melted, fragranced, poured. It is fast, it is shiny, it strips the glycerine that real soap forms when oils saponify. The bench at 22 Fairfax Place runs the older method.

From the Lower Ferry pontoon, the South Embankment walk takes you to the corner of Fairfax Place in two minutes. We are on the right at number 22, between Foss Street and Anzac Street. Coombe Gallery is around the corner on Foss. The Old Market and the Royal Avenue Gardens are five minutes further up the hill.
Hours vary by season. In high summer the door is open most days. In winter we run shorter hours and Sundays are variable. The 01803 835005 line is the surest way to confirm before a long walk.

Yes. Every cold-process bar is formulated without palm oil. We also leave out parabens, SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulphate) and petrochemicals across the soap and the wider apothecary range. The label on each bar prints the actual oils used, pure shea butter, olive and coconut, so you can read the recipe before you buy.
Yes. The full soap range is vegan-friendly. The candle range from Devon Candle Co. is poured in soy wax. None of our formulations are tested on animals at any stage. The wrappers print the recipe so you can audit it bar by bar.
Cold-process is the older, slower method: you blend the oils with a lye solution at low temperature, pour the trace into a mould, and let the bar saponify and cure for around six weeks before it is ready to sell. It keeps the natural glycerine in the bar, where melt-and-pour and most mass-market soaps strip it out. The result is a firmer bar that lasts longer in the shower and is gentler on dry skin.
